February Round Up

Another month gone. February seemed to last a long time this year (I know that's a stupid comment). I've worke on a lot of projects that aren't quite finished yet, I finished a few bits and pieces, pulled myself out of my comfort zone a couple of times and signed up for way more quilt-alongs than I'm going to have time for. And a Bee. So here are my finishes:
There are a few Farmer's Wife blocks (I think I've done more than just these); Fergie the froggy, a couple of Swoon blocks, my entry for the Tangerine Tango Challenge which I've called Nine Pins, my finished Melrose Quilt, whoch I gave to Linda for her birthday, a small embroidery for my Mum for her birthday, a few FMQ feathers, my mini Swoon top is finished, and a pinwheel block that I'm teaching to a few beginners.

I signed up to New York Beauty Quilt Along, the Granny Squares Quilt Along at Old Red Barn Co (if you have a few minutes check out the photos in the Flickr group - I'm loving all the modern bright fabrics), and the stained quilt along from Narcoleptic in a Cupboard. As well as a quilt for my manager who has just moved back to Germany, and a baby quilt for a friend.

And I've signed up to the Stash Bee (there are still spaces left in Hive 4 if you're interested).

And I plan to enter the Modern Mini Challenge....

Still in progress: Chasing Chevrons Quilt (I've quilted it this evening and found I don't have enough fabric for sashing); Oh My Stars quilt along - I've made loads of blocks and the end is in sight, plus I bought the fabric for the border. I'm not sure how I'll quilt this one yet, but I have a self-imposed deadline on Easter - I want it on the bed when my parents come to stay; Granny's cushion (untouched since the new year); Swoon (but I have to finish Swoon before I can start any of the other quilts that the group will be doing; stained glass effect wall hanging for my Mum - I have now made some of the binding. And many many other projects... far too many to count.

Isn't it annoying that I have to go to work....

If you have a few moments spare, check out this blog post from Pretty By Hand. Two and a half years ago we lost my Father-in-law to bowel cancer and this blog post is a humourous look at medical procedures connected to it - I haven't sold it well, but please - take five to read this (also check out her other blog posts for some really pretty sewing and a very tidy sewing room).

Mission for March: sign up to less and finish more!

365 Quilt Challenge 2016 [A finish]

I can't believe I've just typed that heading! When I made the block for January 1st 2016 I could not have imagined the journey this quilt would have taken me on. So make yourselves comfortable and grab a cup of tea, because this blog post may get lengthy! I'd seen the 365 Quilt Challenge on Facebook. I think every quilter on Facebook must have been aware of it. Loads of my friends had signed up and it kept popping up as a "Page you might like" thing. In the end, in November 2015, I joined the group, had a poke round. Decided it wasn't for me. One of the things that really put me off were the fabric requirements: you needed x amount of dark dark fabric, x amount of medium dark fabric, x amount of dark medium, medium, light medium, light, background.... I just couldn't get my head round those requirements. I'd looked at the mock ups on the wesbite and couldn't bring myself to pick a colour. I put it to the back of my mind. But I had obvious...

February Embroidery Along [A Finish]

I've really been enjoying my embroidery this year, after not doing very much last year. One of the challenges I set myself at the start of the year was to learn to colour tint my fabric before adding the embroidery - I love buying the pre-printed panels, but I'd like to do this myself as well. And the opportunity to learn this arose in February. Meg Hawkey of Crab Apple Hill Studio hosted a stitchalong to celebrate National Embroidery Month, and the first step was colour your fabric. I bought the pencils she advises,  the blending stumps, something called fabric extender and the pigma pen. And I gave it a go. My first attempt ended badly. Because the one thing I didn't buy was a new, clean paintbrush. So when I came to add the fabric extended, it went all bleary and muddy as, despite cleaning the paintbrush thoroughly, it obviously wasn't clean enough. It was unsalvageable so I started again, and I was so much happier with the results. The practice piece was, in...

Cosmos Dust [finished]

You have seen this quilt quite regularly on my WIP Wednesday posts but I finally get to share it as a finish. When I found out I was pregnant back in June, I always knew that Baby had to have a quilt of her own - a special one, made by Mummy, with love in every stitch. My initial plan did not meet with approval from her Grandmother so I went back to the drawing board. Lots of pinning ensued and eventually, in November, I came across this pin, and followed the link through to the free pattern, which you can find here . The pattern was not an EPP pattern, but had some funny odd angles (not quite Y-Seams). EPP was, for me, the logical plan. By then we also knew we were expecting a girl. If she surprises us when she arrives and is a boy (highly unlikely - fairly obvious body parts are not visible on any of my five scans) then a girly quilt will be the least of his problems! Though Daddy may not appreciate pink sleep-suits, baby-grows and cardigans! I used a palette I'd fallen...
